In 2021 (when the latest data is reported for Albania), 78% of women between the ages of 16 and 74 had used the internet at least once a week during the last three months before the survey was conducted, namely 86.7%, which was average for the same period for women in the European Union.
Albanian men use the internet more. 80% of men, aged 16 to 74, had used the internet at least once a week during the last three months before the survey was conducted, against 87.7%, who was average for the same period for men in the European Union.
Internet use, both by women and men, is the lowest in the region, according to Eurostat statistics, except for Bosnia and Herzegovina and the lowest in Europe, along with Greece and Bulgaria.
The record in Europe is held by Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, with over 95% use for both males and females.
Males stay more on social networks and read more news
In Albania, males dominate social networks. 79.16% of men have used the Internet to access social networks, which means profile creation, or Facebook posts, twitter and so on, against 73.9% of women.
Although they use the internet less, Albanians remain on social networks more than the Swedes, or Norwegians, or Serbs and Bosniaks, but from where Northern Macedonia and Montenegro cross.
Social networks in Albania use more age groups from 15-29, with over 94%, where 20-24-year-olds hold the record with 98.2% (for both genders).
Albanian males are more active than women for online news reading, with 62.4% respectively, against 54.2%.
According to the age group (both genders), more read online news to 25-29 (about 70%). But even older ones already use the internet to inform (39% of the 55-74 age group.
Even to conduct banking actions via the internet, men are more active (7.41% against 5.78%), though for both categories this weight is much lower than the European average of over 64%.
Internet banking actions are carried out more than 25-34 age groups, with about 19% using the internet for the job.
Women in Albania use the Internet more than men to make video calls or calls and to seek health information.
Use in Europe
In 2022, women in the EU used the internet slightly less than men (87 % of women aged 16 to 74 used the internet at least once a week in the last three months before the survey, compared to 88 %s of men.
When viewed as using the internet, there was a smaller percentage of women in the EU than men reading online news (71 of women and 74 % of men using the internet in the last three months before the survey) and who used internet banking (64 % of women and 67 % of men).
On the other hand, a higher percentage of women than men used the internet to search for health information (6.8% of women and 56% of men), to make phone calls or video (75% of women and 71% of men) and to participate in social networks (66 % of females and 62 %s of males).
There were smaller differences (85 % of women and 86 % of men) for sending and getting e-mails.
