Rescue workers rescued the wounded child from the ruins of collapsed buildings after a major earthquake struck Syria, killing tens and wounding hundreds.

A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria early Monday morning, leaving at least 641 people dead, while the number is expected to increase further, writes The Guardian.

Hundreds of people are believed to be still trapped under ruins, while rescue workers are looking for collections of ruins from the collapse of buildings in cities and towns throughout the area.

The Associated Press reported that the Turkish disaster and emergency management agency said at least 284 people were killed in seven Turkish provinces. The agency said 440 people were injured.
