Russia accused Western countries of fuelling tensions in Serbia, with Moscow, which has been shaken by protests over alleged fraud in elections held on December 17th.
Just a day ago, demonstrators tried to attack the municipality of the Serbian capital in Belgrade. Protesters object to the results of parliamentary and local elections in which Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq's party, Aleksandar Vuciq, said it secured a commandal victory, which was welcomed by the Kremlin, reports Guardian, broadcasts Klakosova.tv.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow hopes the result will lead to “further strengthening of friendship” between the two countries.
The collective West's “efforts to destabilise the situation in the country are apparent”, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told state news agency RIA Novosti.
Belgrade did not join international sanctions against Moscow for its offensive in Ukraine, but Serbia has condemned Russia's aggression at the UN and its support has triggered controversy.
Serbia is almost entirely dependent on Russian gas, the AFP reports.
