Former Kosovo Liberation Army General Staff leader Shefqet Kabashi has started testimony via video connection to the Special Court.
He is witnessing in English, as according to him “does not want to be misunderstood by translators because of the Kosovo dialect”.
Kabashi, after the prosecutor's questions began, has refused to be answered in Special Questions, saying this court has caused Kosovo much damage.
I was kind to you, because you know it wasn't my willingness to come, yet you tried to find all the opportunities to bring me here and therefore I can't work with you, with prosecutors”
You hurt so many people, including witnesses and all our countries”, Kabashi said.
By the prosecutor, he has been asked to answer the questions being asked.
“Witness, we would appreciate it if you answered the questions we're asking you, I'll give you the opportunity to explain what happened in previous processes when it's the right moment”, the prosecutor said.
Kabashi's testimony is expected to last two days.
He had also testified in former Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj's trial at The Hague.
Part of Shefqet Kabashi interview:
Prosecutor: Mr. Kabashi, in Limaj case you have testified with protective measures, your identity has not been disclosed to the public. You have then explained to judges who were very difficult to bear witness and that you were only traitors. You have also clarified that when you have witnessed, your family has been threatened.
Why did you testify in Limaj case, what was the reason for your testimony?
Shefqet Kabashi: Because in 1998, I took orders from the previous commander to kill people and I never killed these people and they never stopped even though I was in prison. I knew my life was in danger, but with me it was important that I stop, but I never gave up, because I didn't want to give up.
Because we didn't have to do those things, in the sense of killing each other, we're all Albanians and we can't do the things we did in war and after war.
After the Limaj and Haradinaj case, because as it was seen, no one could be prevented from crimes committed.
Prosecutor: When did you testify in Haradinaj's case you had protective measures?
Shefqet Kabashi: No, I didn't.
Prosecutor: So, the safeguards on Limaj case have you thought about how effective?
Shefqet Kabashi: I considered them useless.
Prosecutor: Witness, we have difficulty listening to you.
Prosecutor: When you met Erroll Berisha, after the war what did you discuss?
Shefqet Kabashi: We discussed a lot of things, I don't know what you really want to know.
Prosecutor: Did Erol Berisha write anything about your war experience after you testified that you had been ordered to kill him, did he make an article about it?
Shefqet Kabashi: Yeah, a few times. But the last time he did that was before he died in his account on Facebook, he explained that I wasn't the only one behind me who tried to kill him.
Prosecutor: Do you remember anything else he said in this post on Facebook?
Shefqet Kabashi: He said it was true what Kabashi said in the interview I was in. In the case of 98, when I went to his house I knew Errol Berisha, and I knew his family, he was a good Albanian family. /albanian mail
