The suspect for deadly shooting in Brussels is a 45-year-old Tunisian who sought asylum in Belgium in November 2019. According to information from Belgian authorities, he is probably living in that country since 2016.
The man took on the radar of police services when in 2016 a foreign police service classified him as radicalized and reported that he wanted to go to a “area of conflict jihadist”.
Nothing concrete was done with that information because there were many such reports at the time, according to Belgian Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne.
The person is known to the police for suspicious activities, smuggling with people, standing illegal and breaking state security. The man was allegedly sentenced in Tunisia for a violation of common law and not terrorism, as was previously reported by various media.
Prime Minister Alexander De Cru announced at today's press conference that the suspect is still on the run. He characterised the attack as “terrorist-crazy”.
From familiar details of the attack in Brussels, it is treated as terrorism
He expressed his condolences to the victims' families and stressed that the search for the author is at its peak. He confirmed that the alert level in Brussels has risen to the highest level (4), and to the rest of the country at level 3.
Two people were killed before the match between Belgium and Sweden and were allegedly Sweden's fans in Brussels.
