Secretary - General NATO Jens Stoltenberg said it is necessary for Pristina and Belgrade to refrain from actions that could lead to further escalation and return dialogue under the auspices of the European Union.
Stoltenberg stressed at the news conference yesterday that NATO troops in Kosovo have recently reinforced with several hundred soldiers from Italy, Bulgaria, Romania and Great Britain.
There are still tensions, it's a difficult situation, we're monitoring it very carefully and we're increasing our presence especially in the north. The main message is that both sides -- Belgrade and Pristina -- refrain from actions that could lead to further escalation and refrain from stimulating rhetoric”, Stoltenberg said.
He said Belgrade and Pristina should return dialogue under EU auspices.
“I think it is also an important message to see that the EU and NATO are working side by side and that NATO's added troops in Kosovo are supporting increased EU diplomatic efforts”, Stoltenberg said.
