US President Joe Biden has ordered additional assistance for Israel following a surprise attack on the Jewish state by the militant group Hamas on Saturday. While the Israeli government declared war and Israel continues to bomb targets at the Gaza Strip in retaliation for Hamas' intervention on the country's territory, American officials have committed to lower tensions in the region.
The American Embassy in Israel warned American citizens that the situation remains unpredictable “”, while US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Washington is continuing to make efforts to defuse the situation.
I talked to the Israeli president, the foreign minister. The entire government is engaged in the region and wider, to mobilise support for Israel and to ensure that all states are using the influence and means available to curb Hamas and ensure that the conflict does not explode in other parts,” said Mr. Blinken.
Over 20,000 people have been sheltered in schools operated by the United Nations for Palestinian refugees.
Meanwhile, family members of Israeli civilians allegedly held hostage by Hamas went to police stations to give AND samples to help investigate.
Washington is making efforts to collect all necessary information for affected American citizens. The State Department confirmed Monday that nine Americans are among the dead in Israel.
For our government, for this administration, the Americans who are being held or who are hostages are of priority,” said Mr. Blinken.
Details of how the surprise attack has been carried out in Israel are not yet complete, but the republican candidate in the presidential race and former United States Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said the United States cannot overlook developments there, even despite domestic political challenges.
America must wake up. We need to give up our divisions. And we need to focus on our national security and our friends',” stated Mrs. Haley.
Republican lawmaker Matt Gaetz, who recently took the initiative for the dismissal of House of Representatives Chairman Kevin McCarty, in an interview for NBC television, voiced optimism that the political gap, which some fear could slow down Israel, will close in the near future.
I think we'll work it out soon. I think we have two very good options,” he said.
