The president of the United States, Joe Biden, said Wednesday that “data” shows Israel is not responsible for an explosion that left hundreds dead at a Gaza Strip hospital Tuesday evening.

Asked by reporters during his visit to Tel Aviv on Wednesday why he was sure that Israel was not behind, Biden said: “The data my defence department showed”.

Beden began his visit to Israel on Wednesday in a diplomatic effort not to turn into a broader conflict -- a challenge that has become more difficult as anger rose throughout the Middle East over the explosion at Gaza City Hospital.

Presequently during meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyah, Biden said the explosion did not appear to be caused by Israel.

“Based on what we've seen, it seems [exploration] was carried out by another team, not you”, Biden said during that meeting.

But the American president said there were a lot of people out there “who weren't sure what caused the explosion.

Biden said that the US has made it clear that it stays with Israel, “but I wanted to personally come and make this clear”.

The American leader said his state would ensure that Israel has the necessary means to continue responding to the attacks of Hamas militants.

“Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people and has always brought them pain”, he said.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyah thanked the US for its support. He also again compared Hamas' militants to the militant group, the Islamic State (IS).

Initially, Beden was prepped to visit Jordan as well, but his meetings with Arab leaders have been cancelled as he left Washington. / REL
