Ardern spoke with excitement as he showed how six years “challenged” on this job had been affected.
Labusist Party MPs will vote to find its replacement Sunday.
The shocking announcement comes as polls show the party faces a difficult road to re-election on October 14th.
42-year-old Ardern said she had taken time to examine her future during summer vacation, hoping to find the heart and energy to continue.
But unfortunately I haven't done it and I'd do a bad New Zealand service if I go further”, she told reporters Thursday.
Yacinda Ardern will resign on February 7th at the latest. If no potential successor receives the support of two-thirds of the party room, the vote would go to the secular members of Labusists.
She became the youngest woman at the head of government in the world when she was elected prime minister in 2017 at the age of 37. And a year later, she became the second chosen world leader to ever be born during her post, after Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan in 1990.
Ardern led New Zealand during the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent recession, shooting at the Christchurch Mosque and the volcanic eruption of the White Island.
