Continued rise in cases with COVID-19, satellite images capture crowds at Chinese funeral homes

Satellite images taken in a number of Chinese cities have caught crowds at funeral homes as the country continues its battle with an unprecedented wave of COVID-19 infections, following the disposal of grave pandemic restrictions. Images taken from Maxar at the end of December and early January, and revised by CNN, show a funeral home on the outskirts of Beijing, which appears to have built a brand-new parking area, as well as scores of vehicles waiting outside funeral homes in Kunming, Nanjing, Chengdu, Tangshan and Huzou.

China recently left its strict approach to the virus, which had sparked massive unrest after more than two years of strict control in the personal lives of citizens.

China's strict policy protected its population from the kind of mass deaths seen in Western countries, a constant contrast promoted by the Communist Party to illustrate the supposed superiority of its restrictions.

Since those rules were removed, people have regained their freedom to travel through their country.

Satellite photos are consistent with CNN reports and witness accounts distributed to social media regarding overcrowding in funeral homes and crematoriums.

CNN has reported first-hand images in Beijing of improvised objects used to preserve the deceased, as overloaded staff tries to keep up with the volume of crates containing yellow body bags, while families report that they wait for days to bury or burn their loved ones.

Meanwhile, the official death toll from Covid-19 to China since the easing of restrictions remains extremely low, with only 37 deaths recorded since December 7th.

Meanwhile, reports of overloaded hospitals and funeral homes are circulated, China is facing charges from the World Health Organisation (OBSH) and the US that it is underscoring the severity of its current COVID-19 explosion, as top global health officials ask Beijing to share more data about the spread of COVID-19.

“We continue to ask China for faster, regular and reliable data on hospital and death, as well as the most comprehensive viral sequence, in real time,” said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebrreesus, at a press conference in Geneva on Wednesday.

“O The BSH is concerned about the risk of life in China and has reiterated the importance of vaccination, including reinforcement doses, to protect against hospital hospitalization, serious illness and death,” he said.

Speaking in more detail, O executive director BSH for health emergencies, Mike Ryan said that the numbers released by China “represent the true impact of the disease” on hospital admissions and ICU, as well as deaths.
