In a press release Sunday, Pelosi said a delegation would travel to HINA Indo-peacenaire) to reconfirm “strong and consistent devotion to our partners in the region”.
The delegation left Hawaii on Sunday and will have stops in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan. Pelosi said that in these countries they will hold high-level meetings to discuss the advancement of “of common values and interests”, including peace and security. Taiwan was not mentioned in this announcement.
There have been local speculation that Pelosi would visit Taiwan at the end of her tour on Thursday. On Monday, Taiwan Prime Minister Su Tseng-chang did not respond directly when asked, but he told reporters that “we always welcome the visits of foreign guests to our country”.
China considers Taiwan as a breakaway region destined for reunification and strongly opposes all actions leading to Taiwan's recognition as an independent state. During a phone conversation that lasted more than two hours, Chinese President Xi Yingping warned his American counterpart, Joe Biden, that “who plays with fire is burning” against what he considers China's “territorial integrity”.
China said on Monday that its army “would not stand by” if Pelos visited Taiwan.
The United States has no formal relations with Taiwan, but they hold friendly reports and are legally obliged to donate weapons for self-defense.
Taiwan's government does not comment on Pelosa teska's visit, it prefers to preserve the security of éstatus quaoʹ while boosting its relations in the United States. /Periscopi/
