This could include rocket shooting near Taiwan, or large-scale air or sea activity, spokesman John Kirby said, the BBC reported on Tuesday.
Pelosi, chairman of the US House of Representatives, is staying in Malaysia on Tuesday within the framework of her tour of Asia.
Taiwanese and American media say she plans to visit Taipei on Tuesday evening, but there is no official confirmation.
However, answering journalists' questions Tuesday, Taiwan's chief minister, Su Tseng-chang, said the island “warmly welcomes” every foreign guest.
Taiwan is a self-government island, but claimed by China, which views it as a breakaway province. Beijing has warned of “severe consequences” if Pelosi visits it.
While the U.S. preserves what it calls a “strong, unofficial relationship with Taiwan”, it has formal diplomatic relations with China rather than with Taiwan.
On Monday, China's envoy to the United Nations Zhang Yun warned that the visit would undermine relations between Beijing and Washington. China's Foreign Ministry also said a visit by Pelos would create a serious intervention in China's domestic affairs”, adding that “those playing with fire would lose out of it”.
