A day earlier, Israel has carried out air strikes against targets at the Gaza Strip.
Eleven people have been killed as a result of air strikes, including the leader of Islamic Jihad, Taiseer Jabari.
Israel has said the attacks have followed an immediate “threat” from the group.
Several rockets were launched from Gaza towards Israel overnight, and most of them were halted, Israeli military said.
This reported violence represents the most serious escalation between Israel and Gaza this year.
In May 2021, an 11-day war has left more than 200 Palestinians and some Israelis dead.
The parties have later agreed to a truce.
The Israeli Army has warned that the operation that has recently begun could last for a week.
Islamic Jihad is one of the most powerful militant groups operating in Gaza.
This group is supported by Iran and has headquarters in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
The group has been responsible for many attacks, including missile attacks and gunfire against Israel.
Tensions Between Israel and Palestinians
Tensions often develop between Israel and Palestinians living in East Jerusalem, Gaza, and the West Coast.
Gaza is led by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, who has fought Israel several times.
Palestinians in Gaza and West Coast say they are suffering because of Israel's actions and restrictions.
Israel, on the other hand, says it is acting to protect itself from Palestinian violence. / REL
