A regional chief of Ukraine's SBU intelligence services has been found dead at his home in central Ukraine, the general prosecutor's office said.
Oleksandr Nakonechny was found by his wife with gunshot wounds in a room of their residence in the town of Kropyvnytsky on Saturday after she heard gunfire, the office said.
Police have launched an investigation into death, but have made no comment on the event.
A local politician, Andri Lavrus, wrote in the telegram that Nakonechny had shot himself. The information hasn't been confirmed.
Nakonechny has headed SBU to the Kirovohrad region since January 2021.
In July, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fired SBU leader Ivan Bakanov, his childhood friend, saying he did not do enough to free the agency from Russian spies and collaborators.
Zelensky said there will be a review of SBU personnel, and some senior officials at the agency have been fired over the past few months. /abcnews. al
