The US special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, has said dialogue is in the hands of the European Union and that acceptable solution from Kosovo and Serbia must be found to achieve long-term stability.
The “must remain in the hands of Europe. The future of both countries is in Europe, so Europe is taking the lead, but has the full support of the American Administration. We need to look for solutions that are acceptable to both states, leading to normalisation and long-term stability”, Escobar said in Brussels.
Escobar has reiterated that the establishment of association of Serb majority municipalities must take place under the laws of the Kosovo Constitution.
“The issue of association is important. It is a consistent commitment, we think it should be implemented within the laws and Constitution of Kosovo”.
He said that for association, the US is in line with the European Union.
“Absolutely, it should thus be according to Kosovo's laws and Constitution, but does not mean it should be biased for Serbian citizens. Within the EU there are many examples that can be used to find a stable and productive solution for all of”, he stressed.
