“Russia has turned the entire Donetsk region into a fighting centre, where the attitude of civilians is dangerous”, Donesk's regional military administrator Pavlo Krylenko told Ukrainian media. “I urge all to evacuate”, he said. “Evacuation saves the life of”, he added.
Russia already controls 55% of the province of Donetsk after saying that the last days had taken full control of the neighbouring province of Luhansk. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that one of the main objectives of the attack on Ukraine is complete control of its eastern sector, the predominantly Russian-speaking region of Donbas, which includes the two provinces. Russia launched its attack on Ukraine about four months ago.
Some Ukrainians are resisting calls to leave Donnetsk, but Mr. Kyrylenko said only about 340,000 people continue to stay there from nearly 1.7 million people this region had prior to the start of the war.
Only about 23,000 people are still in Sloveniansk, one of the most recent targets of Russian bombings, from a population of about 107,000 before the war, said the mayor, Vadim Lyak. The increased Russian attacks have increased the pace of evacuations.
Ukrainian railway officials said they would increase the number of trains to facilitate evacuations.
Ukrainian officials said that in the last 24 hours, at least 8 civilians were killed and 25 others injured, while pro-Russian separatists said attacks by Ukrainian forces have caused the killings of four civilians. Ukraine said the majority of the victims in its ranks were the result of Russian attacks on Donnetsk.
