US General, Russian expert, takes over NATO's supreme command in Europe

US Army General Christopher Cavoli, who speaks Russian and has a master's degree from Yale to Russian studies, has taken office as the new supreme commander of NATO allies in Europe (SACEUR) at a ceremony in Mons, Belgium. Secretary - General NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said in his speech at the ceremony on July 4th that Cavoli takes command among “the return of the brutal conflict to Europe”.
He replaces retired US General Todd Walters as SACUR commander.
Stoltenberg stressed Cavoli's role in overseeing the latest collection of US troops in Europe in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The general will be key responsible for planning and implementing military measures designed to protect the Western alliance and prevent Russia.
Cavoli was born in Germany and lived most of his life on American military bases. He joined the US Army in 1987 and served in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Alongside Russian speaks French and Italian.
