Demonstrators continue to conquer the presidential palace and prime ministerial residence and have refused to leave until leaders leave.
Parliament Speaker said on Saturday the president would resign on 13 July.
But many protesters were very skeptical of the announcement.
On Monday, Prime Minister Ranil Wickresinghe's office said in a statement he was officially informed by Mr. Rajapaxa that he would leave Wednesday. However, there was no direct word from Mr. Rajapapasa.
Under Sri Lanka's constitution, his resignation can only be accepted officially when he resigns by letter to parliament speaker . which has not yet happened.
Wickreminghe had also said earlier that he would withdraw from his position.
