US President Joe Biden has pledged that women travelling for abortion will be protected by the federal government.

Millions of women in the United States lost the constitutional right to abortion in June after the Supreme Court overturned the 50-year-old Roe v Wade verdict. The decision has paved the way for states to halt the procedure.

At the same time, Google says it is taking steps to remove data from user's whereabouts that can be used to prosecute women for visits to US abortion clinics.

Women in countries where abortion is prohibited or restricted may be forced to cross state boundaries in parts of the country where the procedure remains legal, the BBC reports.

Speaking at a virtual meeting with governors of democrat states, Biden said he believed some American states would try to arrest women crossing state borders to gain access to abortion.

I don't think people believe this will happen. But it will happen”, he said.

The president added that the government would provide access to pills that cause abortion in states where it was banned.

But an intervention by the federal government could lead to more legal challenges that could reach the Supreme Court, Dr Matthew said. Wilson, a political science expert at South Methodius University, for the BBC, especially if states believe the federal government “is actively working to overturn and undermine state laws”.

The collapse of the Roe v Wade law has caused shock throughout the United States.
