In the early 1990 ' s, the country's population nearly tripled, reaching 3.3 million.
After the years, the 90s of rapid developments that took place in the country brought about major demographic changes. The population began to fall rapidly, initially influenced by the high level of migration that culminated in the first decade of transition and then by the new lifestyle, with lower fertility and smaller families.
At the end of 2021, Albania's population is estimated to be at 2.8 million people, although this is just an estimate, since the last Centi was carried out in 2010 while the new one is expected to develop this year.
The United Nations organisation (OKB) predicts that the number of residents living in Albania will continue to shrink rapidly in the years ahead.
According to UN projections, by 2050 Albania's population is expected to drop to 2.5 million and by 2100 will shrink to 1.1 million people, thus reaching the 1960s (see the graph).
Other data processed by Visual Capitalist shows that Albania's population is expected to shrink by 15.8% by 2050, according to the report, ranking 10th after Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Moldova and Japan.
Albania, among 10 countries to face world's largest population decline
Reasons
The decline in birth rate and continued migration are two reasons that are affecting population reduction. According to the UN, about 40% of Albania's population already lives abroad. Meanwhile, the migration cycle has revived in recent years, including families, educators, and especially young people. Even David-19 has increased mortality by 2020-2021.
According to INSTAT, Albania's population on January 1st 2022 results in 2,793,592, undergoing a drop of 1.3 %, compared to January 1, 2021. This is the fifth year in a shrink year of the number of residents.
During the year 2021 the natural addition of the population (born-death) was -3.296, marking for the first time the extra natural negative.
During the year 2021, a significant migration increase was confirmed and the number of returnees remains low. I NSTAT reported that the number of immigrants in 2021 was 9,195, and the number of immigrants was 42,048. The number of fugitives, according to INSTAT graphics, was the highest since 2019 and 2014.
And fertility rates (denoting the number of children a woman can make during her lifetime) are dropping rapidly year after year, signalling a population drop. The birth rate has dropped to about 1.3 births per woman (below the replacement rate), dropping significantly from 6 in the 1960s and over 2 in the early 1990s, according to INSTAT.
The decline of fertility below the population replacement rate signals population decline over decades and rapid aging. The continent for this reason is suffering the needs of the labour market. The demand for work prompted by the demographic factor will create the conditions for a safe flow of migration even from developing countries such as Albania.
Affected by high immigration rates, Albania's population has entered a fast aging process, becoming a major problem for the country's sustainable economic development. /Monitor. al
