At least two children were killed and eight others were injured in an explosion south of Afghanistan, a local official said Tuesday.
The blast occurred in the province of Zebulun, said the head of the province's intelligence and culture department, Sharafat Wayner.
Children were reportedly playing with an unbroken mortar shell when the tragedy occurred, a witness said in a video distributed by a Taliban official.
A doctor at the regional hospital said two of the children were in critical condition and two died before they arrived at the hospital. Six more children are being treated in the hospital.
Unbroken tools left over decades of war often cause victims of children in Afghanistan.
Last Wednesday, the United Nations said it had registered 2,106 civilian casualties in the war-torn country over the past ten months.
One of the main causes are unbroken ammunition. According to the United Nations, at least 118,443 people have been killed as a result of armed conflict in the country since December 2008, when the UN officially began registering civilian victims.
