These developments come as Beijing has increased its military presence in the region, with many fighter planes flying near the island recently. Furthermore, China has named its massive aircraft carrier according to the province closest to Taiwan, spreading fears that plans for an invasion are approaching.
Speaking of the anxiety being felt by several companies, an international relations expert specialising in China, Danil Bockov, wrote on Twitter:
Over the course of two years, anxiety has increased significantly over Taiwan as China has sent more and more planes near the island. Some companies have been worried that the head of the American Command at Indo-Peacekeeping in March 2021 had said China could take military action against Taiwan by 2017”, he said.
This concern has been supported by Financial Times correspondent for China Reports - The US, Demetri Sevastopulo, who also tweeted: “Many companies have been seeking information about the danger of a war in Taiwan- with a particular interest since the invasion of Ukraine” began.
Although China has remained neutral about its Russian occupation in Ukraine, some experts believe war is having direct impact on the Chinese economy as trade with Russia has slowed as a result of Western sanctions against Russia.
Some voices have said China will react to such economic losses and try to mediate a ceasefire and end the war. /Periscopi/
