A polar bear has been saved after a can of condensated milk remained in its mouth on the Arctic coast in northern Russia.
The female, two - year - old bear was saved after being seen by local residents wandering through huts in a village.
The bear was rescued by a team from the Moscow Zoo, which by helicopter managed to calm the animal with an arrow, and removed the sharp metal from its mouth, treating the cuts in its tongue.
Svetlana Aculova, director general of the Moscow Zoo, said the other important stage for the bear is anesthesia recovery.
We hope everything will be fine. We left some fish near the bear because she had been without food and water for a long time”, she said.
The bear will stand in observation for several days and then be sent to its natural habitat with a fish supply.
The polar bears rely on sea ice to hunt seals. But with Arctic warming four times faster than the rest of the world, sea ice is melting earlier in summer and freezing later in autumn.
This forces them to spend more time on the shore, away from their natural prey, SkyNews reports, broadcasts Clankosova.tv.
In a report this week, scientists from Canada and the United States have warned that hungry polar bears are increasingly returning to garbage dumps to feed, as their habitat is disappearing due to climate change.
Scientists said human waste poses a growing threat to the vulnerable populations of polar bears as animals become more dependent on warehouses near northern communities in countries like Russia, Canada and Alaska.
