Hundreds of police troops and commandos were deployed before protesters, hours before they left the area.

The BBC reports that a journalist has been beaten by the army and that a soldier grabbed the phone and erased the videos.

Nine people, including two injured, have been arrested by police.

These tensions come after Ranil Wickreminghe was sworn in as president Thursday, after former President Gotabaya Rajapasa left the country last week.

Wickreminghe ʹ former prime minister is seen as deeply unpopular with the public and has pledged harsh action against demonstrators.
