Albania thus becomes the second NATO member state to approve the expansion of the north-Atlantic defence alliance with the two northern European states.
On Tuesday, Canada became the first state to ratify the membership of the two Nordic countries in NATO in its parliament.
“Canada enthusiastically supports Finland and Sweden to join NATO. This morning, we were the first to officially ratify their admission to the Alliance. We are stronger together,” Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie wrote on Twitter Tuesday.
Finland and Sweden, which so far have maintained military neutrality, have applied to become NATO member states after the Russian invasion in Ukraine. The two states have signed protocol for NATO membership on 5 July.
The accession protocol should be approved by the parliaments of the alliance's 30 member states prior to the formal accession of both states.
So far, only Turkey has rejected the membership of Finland and Sweden, but these objections have been averted as the two states have made a series of compromises with this NATO member.
