Over 620 divorces for 5 months, sociologist tells why there is so much

Kosovo Statistics Agency data for 2021 speaks of 2160 divorces. And the data for this year, exactly for the first five months of the year, are 623 divorces, with May that has mostly recorded divorce cases with 143.

Age that has mostly had divorces over the past year has been the age of 25 to 29, with 465 divorces. The highest number of divorces according to the permanent settlement in the municipality and the duration of the marriage last year was the municipality of Prizren, with 189 divorces.

Sociologist Jeton Brajshori tells Kosovo that jealousy and economic problems are two of the reasons leading up to the collapse of reports between spouses.

However, he feels that divorce is the best solution for violence, especially if the couple have children.

There are many causes of divorce, but the main reasons for divorce are first jealousy, economic causes, mental problems of partners... Divorce greatly affects the couple's psychology, but still if the couple married for a while and had children, then if there is domestic violence, it is still better than the children to grow up to see domestic violence, since they too experience it very hard. But for both sides, it is better to have divorce”, he said.

Brajshori thinks that women's education has influenced them to change their thinking by making her decide for herself and not to sacrifice herself for the family image by enduring everything.

The reason why we have a divorce in many of us is because women are now starting to go to school, to pursue a career, to look at life differently, and it's not like before that when the family has decided everything for the girl, and today a girl just wants her career, education, and no torture that girls have experienced in us before, because she wants to make her own life whatever she wants and is a major cause for divorce... Even if the girls receive their inheritance from the family then the legacy provides you with a freedom, independence, more for themselves and thus more self - devotion to”, Brajshori added.

However, the 623 divorce rate is only for the first five months of this year, according to sociologist Brajshori, for a small country like Kosovo is high.

He said another problem involving the couple is that there are different attitudes about family planning that could lead to divorce.

And one of the problems is family planning, maybe one of the couple because of economic causes doesn't want to have children, and therefore there are many problems that connect us to divorce, the number will go on growing. The more we are emancipated, a educated female, then she will see life differently and divorce in the coming years will be higher”, he added.

Unlike divorces, 7811 cases of adultery in Kosovo have been recorded during the first five months of this year.
