Moscow has made repeated threats against allowing Ukraine to join the EU, but Western leaders have been largely supportive.
Zelensky said: Of course, this week we should expect from Russia an intensifying of its hostile activities. We're getting ready. We're ready. ”
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week he had no “against” Ukraine's application, but embracing Ukraine from the EU would interfere with Moscow's intentions to keep its neighbour out of the realm of Western influence.
EU leaders will review Ukraine's bid at a summit Thursday and Friday, but the EU executive ʹ the European Commission has recommended that it continue.
However, the process itself can take many years to complete.
