An earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan morning, leaving hundreds dead, according to first information. The exact number of victims and wounded of the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that hit the province of Pacta is still unknown.
The Associated Press news agency (AP) reports that according to a civil emergency official in Afghanistan, the number of victims totals 920, while 600 are thought to be the wounded.
The quake, which struck during the early hours of the morning as many people slept, was an earthquake about 51km apart, according to the US Geological Service.
State news agency “Bakhtar” reported the details and said rescue teams have arrived with helicopters in areas affected by the earthquake.
A strong earthquake rocked four areas of the Pact province, killing and wounding hundreds of fellow countrymen and destroying dozens of houses”, Titter Bilal Karim, spokesman for the Taliban government, wrote. “We call on all rescue agencies to send teams to the area immediately to prevent further disaster. ”
The shocks were felt in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, and elsewhere in the eastern province of Punjab.
