“A fundamental sentence will send an unmistakable message that those involved in sexual abuse and trafficking of minor victims will be accountable to law” said US district judge Alison J. Nathan was reading the sentence.
“The rule of law requires and this court agrees, whether you are rich or completely unrecognised, no one is above law”.
In December, a jury sentenced Maxwell for sexual trafficking, transportation of a minor to participate in illicit sexual acts and two counts of conspiracy.
Maxwell's behavior was extremely predatory. She was an accounting criminal, sophisticated and dangerous, who robbed vulnerable young girls and arranged them for sexual abuse,” wrote prosecutors in a court file.
Prosecutors had asked judges to sentence Maxwell to 30 to 55 years in prison, while the test department recommended 20 years. Maxwell's lawyers demanded a milder sentence from 4.25 to 5.25 years in prison.
During the detention hearing, Maxwell also turned to the victims and apologized. /A2 CNN
