“Where would this punishment send? Death penalty? Must be the death penalty”, Erdogan told reporters at the fire-hit resort in Marmaris.
Turkey lifted the death penalty in 2002 and parliament must first vote before Erdogan approves it.
A fire in Marmaris, which has been lit since Tuesday, has affected 4,000 hectares and has forced 435 people to evacuate, Erdogan said, Anews, broadcast Klakosova.tv.
On Friday, a court in Marmaris sent a man to prison after he “rifeu” had sparked fire from anger over a family dispute, the state news agency Anadolu reported.
A second person was arrested in the Mediterranean resort city of Antalya, about 500km northeast of Marmaris, for alleged arson Friday, Anadolu reported.
The death penalty would be a “pre-emptive” and should be considered seriously, Erdogan added, without elaborate if he refers to fires in particular or other acts due to the triggering of a fire.
Last summer, massive fires destroyed thousands of hectares of forestland across Turkey.
The first major fire of this season in Marmaris raised fears of a possible spread in other regions.
