Over 42 thousand emigrated last year

According to “Population assessment for 2020” the number of residents in Kosovo at the end of 2020 has been estimated at 1,798,186 resident residents, the number taken as basic given to assess the population number for 2021.

Births

According to preliminary data, the number of live births for 2021 that had declared Kosovo a residential settlement was a total of 29,236 births.

Deaths

The number of deaths in 2021 that had declared the residential residence in Kosovo was 14,845 cases of death.

In birth and death cases by the Serb community, a considerable portion of them are recorded until, in all, a portion of them (especially municipalities in the northern part of Kosovo do not register/report birth and death cases). The AKS in this report has not made an assessment to the community in question of unreported cases. A significant number of birth cases and deaths occurring outside Kosovo, in case of registering cases in civil offices, their permanent/resident residences declare it in Kosovo.

“The ASK is aware that the overwhelming part of those cases that have occurred abroad are not/were resident in Kosovo, but, given legislation in power, the AKS has no right to change the statements of parents or relatives for residence. Reviewing birth and death cases will take place after census”, the report says.

Natural Growth

Kosovo's population during 2021 has grown to 14,391. International immigration- according to data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MPB), municipality, U n NHCR, IOM data from several municipalities, data from some statistical institutes and data from Eurostat databases, the number of immigrants to Kosovo during 2021 was a total of 4,122 people. This number includes returnees / returnees, the number of asylum seekers in Kosovo who have acquired citizenship rights, as well as all those who have residence permits more than a (1) year's stay in Kosovo (including workers and students.

International Emigration

The number of Kosovo immigrants during 2021 is estimated to be a total of 42,728 residents, including legal and illegal immigrants. The overwhelming part of immigrants for 2021 were legal immigrants. Legal migration was due to family union, marriages, employment, permanent deportation (mostly in neighboring countries), long - term employment studies, and so forth. A number of Kosovars had emigrated to other countries mainly to the US, Turkey, Canada and other countries besides the EU and EFTA countries.

International Migration Expressed in 2021, it was also the result of a large number of immigrants who returned in 2020 (due to COVID-19), especially Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Turkey and other EU countries who then migrated again in 2021.

International migration balance- In Kosovo for 2021 it was -38,606. National migration -- during 2021, estimates that a considerable number of Kosovo's residential population has changed residence (the municipality) for various reasons mainly from rural settlements in urban and sub-urban populations, as well as because of marriages. The number of people who have changed residences from the previous municipality (from one municipality to another municipality within Kosovo) is estimated to be a total of 7,353 people.
