Ursula von der Leyen, chief of the European Commission, said Ukraine's war is questioning international order as it addressed the hall at the World Economic Forum, writes The Guardian.
“The leaders in Davos had to talk about making the world better together, but instead they have to talk about Putin's invasion. It's not just a Ukrainian survival issue or European security issue. I'm questioning the entire international order.“, said von der Leenen.
Ukraine must win this war. And Putin's aggression should be a strategic failure.
Von der Leyen said Ukraine needs budgetary support now, so the EC proposed a $10 billion financial assistance package, its largest ever package for a third country.
The same determination will help Ukraine rise from the ashes, von der Leyen insists.
The job is huge, but “together we can and will meet the challenge”. Any country that cares about Ukraine, multinational institutions, all companies must contribute.
Von der Leyen said Russian assets frozen abroad could also be used to finance reconstruction:
We should not leave a single stone unturned, perhaps using the Russian assets we have frozen. ”
