Dozens of people have been rescued from the building, which mainly contains shops, the Indian authorities said.
The building is located in the Mundka area in New Delhi.
The cause of fire and other details is unknown as more than 20 firefighters were trying to extinguish the flames.
“concerned by the tragic fire accident in a building near the Mundka subway station in Delhi. My condolences to the families of the victims. I hope the rapid recovery of the injured”, wrote in Titeter the president of India, Ram Nath Covind.
Fires are common in India, where building laws and safety standards are often ignored by builders and residents.
In 2019 a fire caused by a short electrical circuit swept through a building in New Delhi and killed 43 people.
