Finland's President, Saul Niinsto, has told Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin of plans to join NATO.
The transcript of this call has already been made public by Finland.
It says that Niinsino told Putin “that Russian demands at the end of 2021 aimed at preventing countries from joining NATO and the invasion of Russia in Ukraine in February 2022 have radically changed the security environment in Finland”.
“President Niinsto announced Finland will seek NATO membership in the coming days”, he added.
The Finnish president added how he told Putin at their first meeting in 2012 that “each independent nation maximizes its security” and that by joining NATO, Finland is taking on its responsibilities.
“Biseda was direct and without irritation. Avoiding tensions was considered important”, Niinsto said in a statement, writes SkyNews, broadcasts Clankosova.tv.
After Finland's announcement that it plans to apply for NATO membership, Russian power supplies to its neighbour have been cut off and Russia has conducted military exercises in its Baltic Sea enclave, Kaliningrad.
