Biden made these comments Monday during his first visit to Japan since he arrived in office.
He said the pledge to protect the self-led island is even stronger after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Asked by a journalist in Tokyo if the United States would protect Taiwan in case of the attack by China, the American president responded with “Po”.
“This is the commitment we have made”, he said.
We reconcile with the politics a China. We signed it and all the deals made from there.
But the idea for it to be taken by force is not appropriate”.
He added that he expects such development will not happen or be promoted.
He said such a conflict “would destabilise the entire region and would be an act similar to that in Ukraine”.
Beden's comments appeared to be a departure from the existing US policy to the so-called “strategic integrity” towards Taiwan. /Periscopi/
