“After there is no gas pipeline directly running from Russia to Denmark, Russia will not be able to directly suspend its gas supply to Denmark, and therefore it will be possible for Denmark to secure gas,” the company said, adding that Denmark would buy more gas on the European market.
Russian authorities have earlier announced that they will accept payment for natural gas deliveries only to their national currency, demanding that customers open bank accounts in rubles or risk having the supply suspended.
The move comes in response to a series of international sanctions imposed on Russia since its invasion in Ukraine on 24 February of this year.
Gas accounts for 18 percent of the energy consumed annually in Denmark. Local production represented three quarters of the consumed gas in 2019.
Russia has so far been one of the main sources of natural gas import, according to the Danish Energy Agency.
