US anti-Russian oil sanctions: EU is having trouble dealing

Ahead of the two-day summit starting this afternoon, leaders are trying to secure an agreement, Reuters reports. The EU's proposal for the sixth package of sanctions against Russia included a ban on importing all Russian oil products.
The oil embargo could disrupt one of Russia's main supplies that was financing its military action in Ukraine.
To impose sanctions, all 27 member states must agree to sanctions. Hungary has said the ban on Russian oil imports would harm its economy. Similarly, Slovakia and the Czech Republic have expressed their concerns, according to Reuters. The three countries depend on Russia's Druzhba pipeline for oil supplies.
To reach a reconciliation, leaders on Monday proposed a compromise that would only prevent Russian oil brought to the EU by tanks. But some EU leaders warned it would weaken sanctions.
Hours before the meeting, Estonia Prime Minister Kaya Kallas said: “I don't think we will reach an agreement today”.
