Governor Greg Abbott said the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, was apparently killed by police officers who went to the scene and that two officers were hit with firearms. The governor said their wounds were not serious.
Authorities say the suspect acted alone.
Mr. Abbott had said at a press conference several hours after the incident that 14 schoolchildren were killed as well as a teacher/son. But Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez later told CNN, quoting Texas state police, that the death toll had grown to 18 children and three adults. The author of the attack was a resident of the area and entered the school with a gun, and perhaps even with a rifle and opened a fire, said Mr. Abbott. He said the killer was likely killed by officers who arrived at the scene, but that the event is still under investigation.
A large number of police went to the scene, with officers wearing bulletproof vests running traffic and FBI agents walking in and out of the building. School and city officials have not answered questions for comments.
President Joe Biden has been informed about the event, White House Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre said.
Mr. Beden “will continue to be regularly informed”, she added.
The attack in Texas took place less than two weeks after an armed person opened fire at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, killing 10 colored people. Officials have named that attack a hate crime.
Uvalde has 16,000 inhabitants. The city is about 120 miles [120 km] from the Mexico border. / VOA
