Senegal's president, Macky Sal, confirmed the tragedy at a hospital in the town of Tivatan, around.
“I just learned with pain and concern the deaths of 11 newborn babies in the fire that occurred in the neonatology department of Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh Hospital in Tivauaane. For their mothers and families, he expressed his deepest condolences”, Sally wrote on Twitter.
The president did not provide further details about the fire, says Mirror, broadcast Clankosova.tv.
Local media reported that the hospital “Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh” was recently inaugurated.
The tragedy in Tivaowane comes after several other incidents in the public health institutions in Senegal, where there is great inequality between urban and rural areas in health care services.
A similar incident occurred in the northern town of Lingure in late April, when a fire broke out in a hospital and four newborn babies were killed.
