The Russian invasion of Ukraine has forced both countries -- Sweden and Finland -- to review their belief that military neutrality is the best move to ensure national security, with the two countries expected to make a decision in the coming weeks.
Anderson said the referendum is “a wrong idea”.
“I don't think this is an appropriate question for a referendum”, she told reporters.
There is much information about national security that is confidential, so there are important issues in a referendum that cannot be discussed as well as important facts that cannot be put on the table”, the Swedish prime minister added.
Sweden's Parliament is reviewing security policy with a report expected to be published in mid-May. On the other hand, Andersson's party, the Social Democrats, are considering the possibility of leaving their goal of joining NATO.
