Murphy indicated that visits have to do with strengthening relations in fragile regions and strengthening these countries' relations with the US.
“While Russia continues to lose in Ukraine, they will try to create problems in nearby brittle regions”, Murphy writes.
“I am in Serbia, Kosovo and Bosnia this week with Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Senator Thom Tillis to strengthen US ties with the Balkans in the face of foreign efforts to undermine peace”, he added.
Murphy, at his meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq, in Belgrade, said his state understands Serbia's connection with Russia, but that when it comes to working with democratic states, Serbia should change its approach.
“Washington understands the historic relations between Serbia and Russia, but hopes that Serbia -- along with other democratic countries -- will participate in partnership to stop Ukraine's unprotested invasion of”, Murphy said.
As Tanjug reports, it is important that all democratic countries in Europe send a clear message to Russia that war must be stopped and held accountable.
Vuciq said after the meeting that improving co-operation with the United States is one of Serbia's foreign policy priorities.
Otherwise, Murphy had visited Kosovo and Serbia in 2019, on a visit together with Senator Ron Johnson.
Murphy has declared there have been good meetings in Kosovo.
“I have met with all political parties to encourage internal reforms and progress in dialogue with Serbia”, Murphy wrote on Twitter, distributing a photo from the meeting with former Kosovo president Hashim Thaci, writes Express newspaper.
Senators Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin and Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, urged Kosovo and Serbia to resume dialogue after the then elections in Kosovo, saying sacrifice is needed for reaching a final agreement between Kosovo and Serbia.
At meeting with Serbia's President Aleksandar Vuciq, senators reiterated their message, adding that both Republicans and Democrats in Congress want a stronger friendship with Serbia.
The “should be an agreement on which both sides lose equally in order to earn an equal amount of”, Vuciq had said. /Express
