The order to stop the attack Putin was given to Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.
Putin congratulated Shoig on the successful operation in Mariupol, after which Shoigu claimed Russian forces have captured the city.
Shoigu had earlier declared that more than 2,000 Ukrainian warriors are still in a factory that has a large underground bunker.
