For 75 minutes he left no stone unturned to end Russia's war in Ukraine. But Austrian Chancellor Carl Nehammer, leader of a neutral military state, failed to persuade President Vladimir Putin to stop conflict or attacks on the neighbouring country.
Nehammer is the first leader of a European Union country to breach Russian soil after the start of the invasion in Ukraine and the first face-to-face meeting what gave the order to attack.
He considered the visit to Moscow unfriendly, following what he witnessed during his stay in Ukraine, where he witnessed the massacre in Bucha. So was Putin's waiting, cold, without handshakes, while the conversation was considered direct, open and harsh.
The most important message conveyed by the Austrian Chancellor to the Russian president was that “in a war is only losers and no winner”.
Negotiations with President Putin to end the war considered a task, with the goal of at least reaching a ceasefire to allow for sending humanitarian aid or the removal of civilians from danger zones.
After confronting Putin at his residence in Moscow, Austria's leader will return to inform European countries of his conversation and discuss further steps.
