The article notes that Albania may seek secession from northern Macedonia, according to Prime Minister Edi Rama. Albania's bid to join the European bloc is linked to Northern Macedonia. “While the two countries have met the requirements, on paper, Bulgaria has vetoed the latter on historical and human rights issues”, writes “Euactive”.
“Albania can no longer expect the two neighbours to resolve their quarrel. Our course in that direction will completely change”, Rama said in Tirana on Thursday.
Sources say a positive assessment of Ukraine cannot be on the table unless Albania and Northern Macedonia progress.
Serbia and Montenegro are top of the six Western Balkan countries. But Montenegro's accession process has somewhat broken down, and as Serbia continues to open chapters, there is no real political will to join the EU. “Albania and Northern Macedonia are next, pending to officially launch talks, while Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina have not yet received candidate status”, the article further says.
Prime Minister Edi Rama arrived yesterday in Germany under an official visit, while today he will meet in Berlin with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Among other things, Rama is expected to seek support for the opening of negotiations.
