CIA Director Bill Burns declared today that the United States does not take the opportunity of Russia seeking to use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine, while Moscow continues to face difficulties in the field of battle.
“In view of the possible despair of President Putin and the Russian leadership, given the obstacles they have faced militarily so far, none of us can easily take the threat posed by a possible nuclear tactical weapons tool or low-productive nuclear weapons”, he said at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Burns said the US has not yet seen any sign that Russia is preparing to take such a step.
“While we have seen some rhetorical attitudes on the part of the Kremlin for moving to higher levels of nuclear alert, so far we have not seen much practical evidence of the type of delocation or military provisions that would reinforce this concern, but we look at this very carefully,” he said.
However, in the same comments, Burns warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin has become increasingly isolated and that his <x0orex for danger has increased as his control over Russia has been tightened”.
