“The war will not end with meetings. The war will end when the Russian Federation decides to end and, after a ceasefire, an opportunity for a serious political agreement. We can have all the meetings, but that's not what's going to end the fight”.
On Tuesday, Guterres travelled to Moscow for a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss humanitarian aid proposals and evacuation of civilians from conflict areas, respectively, from the besieged town of Marioupolis.
As a result, Putin agreed to “principled” to allow the UN and the International Committee for the Red Cross to help evacuate citizens from the Azovstal plant in Marioupol, the last Ukrainian defence stronghold in the city.
Asked what role the UN intended to play in war crimes investigations committed by Russian forces in the town of Bucha on the outskirts of Kiev, Guterres reiterated his calls for an independent “mere”.
The Kremlin has denied any involvement in the mass killings of civilians in Ukraine, while repeating groundless claims that images of troops in Bucha's streets are false.
Evidence of mass cemetery in the towns of Bucha and Borodianka has continued to appear since early April, following the withdrawal of Russian forces from the Kiev region. /A2 CNN
