White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki earlier Friday offered condolences to Cancell's family and said the US government had not officially confirmed his death, warning Americans not to travel to Ukraine for any reason.
Cancell was killed Monday fighting alongside Ukrainian forces, members of the Cancell family confirmed to CNN. The 22-year-old was working with a private military contractor when he was killed on 25 April.
