During these days all Albanian politics, both the left and the right are dealing with the president's case. Edi Rama and former Prime Minister Sali Berisha are engaged in the process of electing the new president, but it seems that this process will also have surprises. The TCH has learned that Prince Leka Zogu is the first candidate for president since he also has international blessing.
That was after US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State arrived in Tirana on 4 July last year, today US Ambassador to London Philip Reeker. For several hours, Reeker visited Prime Minister Edi Rama, Prime Minister Lulzim Basha and later accompanied by Ambassador Yuri Kim, he met for the first time an heir to the Albanian kingdom. Philip Reeker met with Prince Leka, and there was a lot of fuss at the time.
We remember that on July 24th, incumbent President Ilir Meta is out of the presidency's mandate. The framework under the Constitution must begin the process of choosing it no later than May 24th. After determining the date of the first round in implementation of Article 87 of the Constitution of the Republic of Albania, a group with no fewer than 20 MPs has the right to propose the Parliament's candidacy for president of the Republic of Albania. An MP cannot propose more than 1 candidate for president. The constitution stipulates there are five rounds for the president's election. In the first three rounds, a majority of 84 votes are required, while in two others -- the fourth and the fifth -- the president could be elected by 71 votes. Raunds from each other must take place within seven days, meaning that the new president of the Republic in May will be voted by the Parliament. The vote for each round becomes secret and without debate.
