There were 140 seats pro, five against and 38 abstained for a resolution sponsored by the United States and supported by many other countries. Several weeks ago, 141 countries supported a resolution condemning Russia's invasion.
Although not binding, the General Assembly resolutions have political weight.
On Wednesday, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield told UN General Assembly member states that by voting in favour of the resolution, which calls in part for an immediate break of hostilities from the Russian Federation in Ukraine, they are voting for the end of the war. ”
The General Assembly heard speeches on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine on Wednesday and Thursday broadcast CNN.
