“First, the “Progressively expanded” unit will be set NATO, with about 1,200 people coming from the Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, Poland and Slovenia. In addition, the Patriot” air defence system will be established, Defence Minister Jaroslav Nadj said.

Because we expect direct military attacks from Russia at the Uzhorod Airport (in Ukraine), near the Slovak border in the near future, this certainly has military implications”, Nadj added, T news agency reported. ASR.

The deployment proposal, which was accepted by the centre-right government on 9 March, was approved by 96 out of 134 lawmakers present, with 15 against.

The issue of foreign troops is controversial in Slovakia. The vote comes just two days before US Defence Secretary Slovakia's first visit since the former Soviet bloc joined NATO in 2004.

Slovakia has accepted more than 200,000 refugees from Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian occupation on February 24th.
